Pug Puppy

Posted by in on 5-11-12

You wake my sleeping laughter
with your pink tulip-petal tongue
your nose like pin pricks
in a black velvet pincushion
your eyes blue smoky marbles
rolling from my past to my future.
Pugnacious pug, alert,
you watch from the train window
pigeons you’ll never catch
paddocks you’ll never play in.
Your tail unfurls to wave.
Your tiny catfish teeth clutch my hand
but never puncture
like I’m reaching through a bramble bush
for a strayed tennis ball.
