The Spider
My house is prone to spider webs of all types, and their creators can be found in most rooms as well as the garage. They come in all types and sizes, and I always seem to find a way to walk into their handy work. Basically if they’re there, I’ll find them.
One day in the laundry room, I spy one of these creatures in a blue crate, sitting on the floor next to the dryer.
“Hmm,” I thought. “Well, another web spinner I see. I wonder how it had got in there. Oh well no matter I’ll squash him in due time, or maybe on my next trip down here it will be gone.”
Several days passed as I make countless trips to do laundry, and always peeking over the top of the crate to see if my friend is still there.
Yes why is he still in there? This creature has now taken over my life, and this random observation has now become an obsession.
As I work shifts of various starting times, I can be found in the basement at any time of the day or night. Each time I head to the basement, I would check in on my companion.
One day I see him trying to climb up the side of the crate. Is the surface too slippery and it cannot gain a foothold? I’m puzzled at this.
Another day passes, and I see a web has been spun. Ah, that’s it. The spider will set a web for his next meal, or maybe build a nest for the next generation. Much like Poe’s character in the “Tell Tale Heart,” I can feel the heart beating from the crate. Is it mine, or the spider asking for help? “Help me out of here please kind sir.”
Another day passes, and I decide to take the crate outside, and release the spider. I can no longer ignore his pleas. I peer in, and find no spider.
Oh, he finally escaped, and now my conscience is clear. I look in another corner in the crate, I see its lifeless body folded up. It is dead, and I feel sorrow upon looking at my enemy.
Much like the spider, we all find ourselves trapped from time to time in places and events which we think are beyond our powers to escape from. Unlike the spider we do have the means to extricate ourselves from these events. When we impose self-detention on ourselves we always must remember that we alone have the key to release ourselves. Each one of us has that power in our hearts.
