Walking on Sunshine

Posted by in on 7-7-12

Joy visits in fleeting moments.
If only Rachel could capture it, bottle it,
hold it in her hands forever, but she couldn’t.
She tried when she was four,
and a cloud of colourful bubbles blew into her face.
She caught, one or two, maybe even three.
But when she opened her hand, they were gone.
She tried again when she was six,
and a pretty butterfly flew past her nose.
But when she opened her hand
its wings were crushed and it was not pretty anymore.
So Rachel had given up, trying to keep joy a prisoner.
Instead she just watched it soar.
Like a beautiful bird on a calm wind, and she soared with it.
Hitching a ride on its wings.
It felt like walking on sunshine, forever.

About the Contributor:

The daughter of a Ghanaian diplomat, I was born in Russia in 1965. My childhood years were spent in a number of countries including India, Italy and Ghana, finally settling in Britain with my parents, two brothers and two sisters, at the ripe old age of 11. I graduated from The University of Surrey with a degree in Biology and Chemistry in 1987 and subsequently gained a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of London. I currently work as a research scientist for a well-known pharmaceutical company. I enjoy cycling into the sunset, swimming in moonlit waters and creative writing, particularly from a positive perspective.
